A once ornate home is transformed through clean lines, warm materials, and thoughtful design.
A house built in the early 2000s carries a particular kind of nostalgia. It is the era of faux Tuscan arches, heavy draperies, and kitchens that believed deeply in the power of ornate corbels. This home, perched on a quiet cul-de-sac in a gated Newport Beach community, leaned fully into the French Provincial fantasy. Carved cabinetry, yellow cream walls, and ornate furnishings defined the space.
The family who purchased the home had a different vision. Compartmentalized walls were removed to reveal cleaner lines and more elegant spaces, uncovering a sense of simplicity that had long been hidden beneath layers of theatrical décor.
Kitchen
The kitchen underwent the most dramatic transformation. In collaboration with the homeowners, interior designer Cora J Design, and eggersmann Laguna designer Kelly Lafosse, the space was completely reimagined. Carved cabinetry was replaced with streamlined walnut cabinetry, bronze finishes, and glass showcases, creating a kitchen that feels warm, refined, and quietly sophisticated—an expression of the understated elegance the homeowners envisioned.
Family Room
The family room, connected to the kitchen within the open plan, became a natural extension of the design. Lacquered cabinetry with alternating profiles coordinates with the kitchen finishes, creating a harmonious transition between spaces that feels simple yet elevated.
Dining Room
The dining room was opened to the surrounding spaces and redesigned with cabinetry that has the durability of a modern finish but the appearance of matte metal. The result is a dramatic yet restrained environment that serves as a showcase for the family’s sculpture collection.
What surprised the homeowners most was not only the visual transformation but the emotional one. The house no longer felt like a set piece, it felt like a sanctuary. Warm woods, lacquered finishes, textured fabrics, and bronze glass details create an atmosphere that feels elevated while remaining comfortable and livable.
Rather than chasing trends, the renovation focused on revealing the home’s potential for quiet luxury with a distinctly California sensibility.
