A Kitchen Defined by Architecture in Austin

Project Details

A restrained material palette and thoughtfully integrated cabinetry bring balance and depth to this contemporary Austin residence.

Located in Austin’s Commander’s Point neighborhood, this new construction residence reflects a thoughtful approach to contemporary living, where architecture, light, and material restraint shape the experience of the home. Designed by Matt Fajkus Architecture and completed in 2024, the project embraces clean geometry and a calm architectural language that allows each element to feel intentional rather than decorative. Within this framework, eggersmann designer Gabriela Espinoza and technical designers Brittany Krueger and Kyndal Trigg developed cabinetry solutions for the kitchen, butler’s pantry, laundry room, and studio office, ensuring the millwork would feel fully integrated with the architecture rather than applied to it.

At the heart of the home, the kitchen reads as a natural extension of the surrounding architecture. The composition is defined by contrast and subtle texture, where material choices create depth without overwhelming the space. Vancouver range in Embossed Fineline Sisal Black introduces a tactile, linear surface that quietly captures light, while Paso Nano Black provides a matte architectural foundation. Accents of Torino anodized aluminum and Glance titanium-framed glass doors introduce precision and reflection, giving the cabinetry a lightness that balances the darker tones. Integrated appliances from Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Miele are carefully incorporated into the millwork, reinforcing the sense that the kitchen is part of the architecture rather than a separate design feature.

Functionality within the space is intentionally concealed. Two hidden passageway doors are designed to read as uninterrupted cabinetry, maintaining the clean rhythm of the kitchen elevation while connecting to adjacent areas of the home. Built with FritsJurgens pivot hardware, the doors operate with quiet precision that mirrors the overall design philosophy. Custom-notched Y-channel handles match the integrated handle profile used throughout the kitchen, creating subtle continuity across the millwork. Elsewhere, double pocket doors conceal the steam oven and microwave, allowing the kitchen to shift effortlessly between everyday use and entertaining. A powered appliance station with sensor lighting provides a discreet home for smaller appliances, while S-BOX pop-up outlets integrated into the island preserve the uninterrupted surface of the workspace.

Beyond the kitchen, the cabinetry continues into the butler’s pantry, laundry room, and studio office, where the same restrained palette and architectural clarity guide the design. In each space, storage is carefully considered and integrated into the overall composition, reinforcing a sense of calm order throughout the home. The result is an environment where cabinetry becomes more than a functional element—it becomes part of the architectural framework itself.
