A Kitchen Composed For Performance in Rolling Hills Estates

Project Details

The most successful kitchens aren’t defined by what you see, but by how they work. In this Rolling Hills Estates remodel, every detail is designed to support the rhythm of daily use.

Set within Rolling Hills Estates, a coastal enclave on the Palos Verdes Peninsula known for its quiet streets, equestrian trails, and expansive views stretching toward the Pacific, the home reflects a lifestyle that values both calm and craft. Removed from the pace of Los Angeles yet deeply connected to its culture of design and culinary exploration, the setting informed the project from the very beginning.

Created for a passionate gourmet cook, the kitchen was imagined not simply as a place to prepare meals, but as a highly choreographed environment where function, precision, and beauty operate in perfect alignment.

As designer Kelly Keyes Miller describes, “When a gourmet cook envisions a kitchen with meticulously curated placement, the result is a masterclass in ergonomics and style.” That philosophy became the foundation of the entire space. Every element was approached with intention. Every tool, every spice, every appliance was given a bespoke home within the architecture of the kitchen, transforming daily routines into a seamless, almost intuitive experience. At the heart of the design is a fully equipped chef’s suite. A combination of combi-steam, convection, and speed ovens supports a wide range of cooking techniques, while a five-burner cooktop and expansive galley sink create a workspace that is as capable as it is refined. Dual refrigerator and freezer columns ensure that storage keeps pace with creativity. But it is in the details where the kitchen truly reveals itself.

Custom-built storage solutions were tailored down to the smallest specification, with integrated lighting illuminating each drawer’s contents like a curated collection. The cabinetry itself becomes a feature, most notably in the backlit display units with Madras glass fronts, casting a soft, rhythmic glow that shifts the atmosphere from workspace to experience. Moments of artistry punctuate the design. Swarovski crystal inlays, subtly embedded at the ends of the islands and above the cooktop, introduce an unexpected layer of brilliance, quietly catching the light and elevating the entire composition.

Materiality plays an equally important role. Ultra-durable porcelain countertops were selected to support a high-performance lifestyle without compromising on visual clarity, while a carefully engineered lighting plan eliminates shadows entirely, ensuring the workspace remains precise, functional, and effortlessly usable at any hour.

Executed by Kelly Keyes Miller and Erika Tanacs of KeyVision Interiors in collaboration with eggersmann designer Kelly Lafosse, the project embodies a concept best described as functional luxury—a space where professional-grade performance and refined design are not competing ideas, but complementary ones. The result is a kitchen that feels as intuitive as it is striking. A place where nothing is accidental, where every detail has been considered, and where the act of cooking becomes something more: a practice, a ritual, and, ultimately, an art form.
