Project Details
Tailored to a life of hosting and creating, this kitchen brings together refined design and purposeful functionality.
This Irvine kitchen was never meant to be just a place to cook—it was envisioned as a reflection of a life shaped by food, hospitality, and connection. In collaboration with eggersmann designer Kelly Lafosse, the space was designed to function as both a professional-grade workspace and the social heart of the home—where performance and presence exist in perfect balance.
For this family, food is a legacy. As a retired caterer and the parent of a pastry chef working in a Michelin-starred restaurant, cooking and baking are deeply rooted in daily life. Hosting is second nature, with gatherings of twenty-five or more unfolding around a space designed to support both preparation and connection.
A guiding principle throughout the design was visual quiet. Clean lines and concealed functionality ensure the space remains calm and composed. A hidden coffee station, pull-out pantry, and integrated waste solutions keep essentials close at hand while maintaining a seamless aesthetic. Touch-to-open cabinetry further enhances this approach, allowing for intuitive movement without interrupting the minimalist design. Ergonomics were equally considered. Every element, from cabinetry to appliances, was thoughtfully positioned to suit the way the space is used, creating a kitchen that feels not only efficient, but deeply personal.
Materiality and form follow a restrained, timeless approach. Flat planes, balanced symmetry, and a curated palette create a sense of understated elegance, while subtle textures add warmth and depth without distraction. Additionally, lighting plays a transformative role, shifting effortlessly from task-oriented brightness during the day to a softer, ambient glow in the evening. As the light changes, so does the atmosphere—transitioning the kitchen from workspace to gathering place.
The collaborative nature of the project made it especially meaningful. Through shared decisions, thoughtful dialogue, and a unified vision, the process became as rewarding as the final result. Even the smallest details were considered with intention. Seating, originally unplanned, became an integral part of the design after a spontaneous moment of comfort during a meeting. The selected bar stools and dining chairs echo the kitchen’s aesthetic while tying into the surrounding living space, creating a cohesive, open-plan environment. Designed to support decades of cooking, hosting, and everyday moments, this kitchen is more than a functional space—it’s a setting for connection. Professional in performance, refined in design, and deeply personal at its core.
