Georgetown Washington DC Custom Kitchen

Project Details

Historic properties like this 1909 Georgetown penthouse apartment offer many challenges and opportunities. The building in the upscale East Village was originally 2 townhomes that were revamped into 7 separate residences in the 1980s. The homeowners enlisted Anthony Wilder Design/Build (Maryland) and Benjamin Johnston Design (Houston) to collaboratively modernize the century-old residence while preserving the charm and historic features of the interior architecture.

The team worked with our eggersmann NY kitchen design team to maximize impact and functionality with a classic, contemporary stone kitchen island.

The Ask

The couple who purchased the residence wanted to downsize without sacrificing versatility and varied options for entertaining. Their eclectic, very vibrant collection of art deserved a neutral palette let their collection take center stage.

The Solutions

The kitchen was relocated to the back of the apartment where it became the heart of the home. Its new location offers easy visual access to the dining area and 2 parlors on either side, one formal, the other casual. This placement of the kitchen amid the entertaining areas was important to the homeowners to enable them to be attentive hosts while preparing drinks or dinner for their guests.

The choice of a neutral palette and classic stone lent a timeless aesthetic throughout the home. In the kitchen, the eggersmann NY team designed a monolithic stone island from our unique cabinetry collection. Every exterior face of the waterfall island is clad in impeccably matched stone veneer. As Benjamin Johnston noted, “…the drawers on the island have marble fronts so that it appears almost as if it was carved out of a single massive block”. The 7cm mitered edge of the stone island, known as FRAME7, added to the modernity and presence of the island.

The storage capacity of the large centrally located island enabled a minimalist design by providing custom storage features to conceal the necessary appliances.

Though the renovation of this classic beauty posed many challenges as most historic NYC high-rises do like requiring scaffolding, an exterior lift, and a crane to bring in materials such as delicate marble sheets and other oversized materials, the clients are thrilled with their new home.
