Reset with Intention: Creating Calm for the Year Ahead

With the holidays behind us, and after the collective effort it took to put everything up and take everything down, it’s worth giving ourselves a moment (and a little grace) to pause before jumping into the New Year. Inhale…Exhale.

Many homes are ready to move forward rather than linger in an in‑between moment. We sat down with Houston‑based interior designer Letecia Ellis Haywood to talk about how she resets her spaces for the New Year, thoughtfully, intentionally, and without overcomplicating the process. From furniture realignments to subtle styling shifts, her approach is all about ease, warmth, and renewed clarity.

The Big Reset

For Letecia, the reset begins not with accessories, but with layout. During the holidays, furniture often shifts to accommodate trees, extra seating, and festive moments. Once everything is packed away, she realigns the room—returning pieces to their rightful places and reassessing how the space will be used in the year ahead.

Occasionally, a chair or accent table earns a new permanent home. The process is intuitive and intentional, guided by how she actually lives rather than how the space looked during the season. It’s less about decoration and more about function, flow, and restoring a sense of balance once the visual noise of the holidays has cleared.

Kitchen Edit

In the kitchen, restraint is key. While Letecia loves a clean countertop, January is the perfect moment to reintroduce something simple and functional.

Her go‑to? A fruit bowl on the island. After weeks of cookies and sweets in heavy rotation, fresh fruit feels like a visual and lifestyle reset—effortless, practical, and still beautiful. It’s a reminder that a styled kitchen doesn’t need to feel precious to feel finished.

Staying Cozy

Once the twinkle lights are gone, maintaining warmth becomes about layered lighting, especially in Houston, where “winter” doesn’t always cooperate.

On cooler days, the fireplace delivers instant glow and comfort. But when temperatures lean closer to 80 than 49 degrees, Letecia relies on candles and lamps, both table and floor, to create inviting light levels. Rechargeable lamps are a favorite. Easy to move, endlessly flexible, and currently living everywhere from her bar cart to the formal powder room. The glow follows her, wherever it’s needed.

That philosophy extends to the way eggersmann USA approaches fireplaces within their home living designs. Whether built around a traditional hearth or paired with a Dimplex flame that offers ambiance without heat, the focus remains on creating visual warmth through light, glow, and atmosphere.

Fresh Take on Greenery

When it comes to florals in January, Letecia keeps it crisp and intentional.

Ranunculus is her favorite choice for the dining table, offering a fresh pop of color without feeling overly seasonal. It’s a small gesture that signals a new chapter while keeping the space light and refined.

Textures & Trends

For 2026, Letecia is drawn to materials that bring depth and tactile interest.

Woven leather is at the top of her list—appearing everywhere from handbags to wall paneling and cabinetry inserts. The patina, texture, and craftsmanship add instant character. She’s also noticing a rise in draped and pleated details in lighting and furniture, bringing softness and movement into otherwise structured spaces.

It’s a direction that closely aligns with eggersmann USA’s approach to texture, where layered materials, expressive veneers, and thoughtfully detailed surfaces are used to add warmth, dimension, and individuality to modern interiors.

Small Change, Big Impact

While paint can completely transform a room, Letecia points to art as her favorite “quick win.”

Rotating pieces within an existing gallery wall—or introducing a new artwork altogether—can instantly refresh a space. It shifts energy, perspective, and mood without construction, making it one of the most impactful updates you can make going into the New Year.

Why Resetting Matters

For Letecia, an organized and refreshed home goes far beyond aesthetics.

She describes it as turning the page to a new chapter in your autobiography—a moment of renewal after the frenetic close of the year. When your environment feels intentional and calm, it creates mental clarity and a sense of possibility. The reset isn’t about perfection; it’s about creating space—for living, for creativity, and for what comes next.

As the New Year begins, Letecia’s approach reminds us that meaningful change doesn’t require a full overhaul. Sometimes, it’s simply about realigning what’s already there—and letting your home evolve with you.
