What to Put in Glass Kitchen Cabinets: Where Style Meets Function

By Sarah DeGrim of Stylish Spaces, a New York-based home organizer and stylist, in collaboration with eggersmann USA

Glass-front kitchen cabinets are more than just storage. They are a design opportunity. These cabinets can open up your space, reflect light, and showcase a beautiful balance between style and everyday function. But what you put inside them matters.

Too often, I see people treat glass cabinets like any other cupboard. The result can quickly shift from curated to cluttered. To make the most of this elegant feature, choose your contents with care. Here are my top tips for styling glass cabinets that are both functional and visually refined.

Everyday Dishes (Yes, Really!)

Don’t hide the good stuff. If you have matching dishware in white, cream, or soft muted tones, this is the ideal spot. Plates, bowls, and mugs in cohesive colors create a calm, clean display.

Glassware and Stemware

Wine glasses, tumblers, or vintage coupes shine behind glass. Group similar styles together and avoid overloading the shelves. Mixing in a few solid pieces can keep things balanced and elegant.

Cookbooks with Character

If you have a few cookbooks with beautiful spines, they can double as décor. Stand them upright or stack them, and add a small bowl or decorative object next to them for a styled look.

Natural Textures

Introduce warmth with wood, rattan, or stone. Items like wooden bowls, woven baskets, or petite cutting boards add depth and contrast to the polished look of glass.

A Pop of Personality

Add a treasure that tells your story. This could be a handmade mug, a tiny sculpture from your travels, or a small potted plant. These details keep the space from feeling too staged.

Soft Lighting

Interior cabinet lighting adds warmth and sophistication. It makes your kitchen feel inviting and gives your styled shelves a beautiful evening glow.

Styling Tips to Keep in Mind

  • Stick to a limited color palette for a serene feel.
  • Leave room to breathe. Keep stacks of dishes under eight.
  • Use symmetry for balance. Line up glassware in neat rows.
  • Edit often. Swap items or remove pieces if it starts to feel too full.
  • In a small NYC kitchen, every inch matters. But that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style. Glass cabinets give you a chance to reflect your personality while keeping your space organized and beautiful. See Sarah’s organizing tips for New Yorkers.
  • If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start, I’d love to help you transform your kitchen into a space that feels both lived-in and lovely.
