the ask
The owner, a custom home builder and renovator in Houston, wanted a fresh, modern, and versatile design of a sensational space that would please any modern luxury home buyer.
Owner and renovator of this ultra-modern Washington Coalition home near Memorial Park in Houston said, “I was working on a new project and I wanted a fresh, modern look and feel for the kitchen. The house has several architectural highlights on the first floor and the kitchen is very prominent. This space would need to have the “wow” factor and, also, be functional and luxurious for the modern homeowner.”
In addition to maintaining and highlighting the unique architectural design of the home, a key goal was to bring in natural light throughout the entire house.
the solutions
We utilized minimalistic details to complement architectural structure of the first floor of the home. Using unique finishes in the kitchen cabinetry and the flooring added character and warmth in the ultra-modern design. To maintain light flow throughout, we designed a floating wall in the center of the kitchen to place the stove, hood, and cabinetry to block direct view of the caterer’s kitchen while enabling light from the floor-to-ceiling windows on the exterior wall to flood the first floor.
The challenge of not knowing who the ultimate homeowner would be was met with a versatile design to suit the family whether they entertain often or not:
- the butler’s pantry is perfect for entertaining but also provides incredible storage and hides all the clutter on a daily basis
- the caterer’s kitchen enables cooking and prepping on a daily basis and for special occasions with ease and the ability to postpone clean-up while still enjoying the kitchen as a gathering area
- a mobile table nests under the counter ready to quickly and easily move to the position where additional seating is needed for a party or is perfect for breakfast every morning just where it is
- incredible light streams thru the clairstory windows enabled by a floating wall for the stove.
