The Holiday Kitchen in Aspen

Project Details

A glass-wrapped retreat designed for holiday gatherings and mountain views.

In Aspen, the landscape naturally takes center stage. Snow-dusted peaks, towering evergreens, and the steady sound of water streaming from the Colorado River through the backyard creek create a setting that feels cinematic year-round. This new construction kitchen was designed as a true holiday retreat, shaped not to compete with that beauty, but to frame it.

Wrapped in floor-to-ceiling windows, the room opens entirely to its surroundings. With glass on nearly every side, storage became the defining design challenge. The solution was architectural and intentional. Along the kitchen’s only solid wall, cabinetry extends fully to the ceiling, transforming necessity into a vertical design feature. Drawers wrap the perimeter for intuitive access, ensuring that holiday entertaining feels seamless and organized.

For the homeowners, Aspen is synonymous with gathering. They envisioned an entertainment-driven experience when in residence for the holidays, a kitchen that would anchor celebrations after long days on the slopes while still feeling calm and grounded.

Natural materials reinforce that connection to place. Silver Oak cabinetry introduces warmth and organic texture, echoing the surrounding forest. A titanium-framed glass element offers contrast and refinement, bringing transparency that mirrors the openness of the architecture. The interplay between solid oak and glass creates visual depth without heaviness.

The Taj Mahal Leather countertop and backsplash add subtle movement and tactility. Its soft veining and leathered finish respond beautifully to changing alpine light, from crisp morning reflections to the golden glow of late afternoon. At the island, Vintage Oak bar seating encourages guests to linger, turning the kitchen into a natural gathering point within the home.

Performance and precision are seamlessly integrated throughout, supporting both intimate family meals and larger holiday entertaining. Thoughtfully executed by Designer Micky Mey alongside Technical Designer Leslie Hodge, the project carefully balances architecture, storage, and natural materiality to create a space rooted in its surroundings.

The result is distinctly Aspen. This is not a kitchen that overshadows its environment. It amplifies it. Surrounded by water, forest, and mountain air, the design responds with restraint, craftsmanship, and quiet confidence.

A Seamless Passage

Integrated within the Silver Oak cabinetry wall, a pivot pantry door creates a nearly invisible transition into the pantry space. The door reads as millwork rather than entry, preserving the clean architectural lines while adding an element of quiet discovery.
