Beyond Shoe Shelves: Designing a Better Wardrobe

Let’s be honest.

Some shoe collections have become… a little out of control.

A few everyday sneakers turn into a shelf. Then a wall. Then an entire wardrobe. Designer heels. Running shoes. Golf shoes. Winter boots. Cowboy boots. Shoes you’ve worn once but refuse to part with.

The funny thing is, most wardrobes treat them all exactly the same.

We don’t.

Instead of asking, “How many shoe shelves would you like?” we start with a much more interesting question:

Tell us about your shoes.

How many pairs do you own? Which ones do you wear every day? Which deserve to be displayed? Which ones should stay tucked neatly out of sight?

It might sound like an unusual conversation, but it’s one of the most important parts of designing a truly custom wardrobe. Someone with twelve pairs has completely different needs than someone with two hundred, and no two collections are ever exactly alike.

Some homeowners want every pair visible at a glance on angled shelves. Others prefer the calm of everything hidden behind beautifully crafted doors. Some want their limited-edition sneakers showcased behind glass while their everyday shoes live on pull-out shelves nearby.

There isn’t a right answer.

There’s only the answer that’s right for you.

Let’s talk shelves.

Not all shoe storage works the same way, and that’s exactly the point.

Some clients prefer stationary shelves. Others like adjustable shelving that can evolve as their collection grows. Pull-out shelves make it easy to access every pair without reaching into the back of the wardrobe, while angled shelves display shoes at the perfect viewing angle, making it easy to find exactly what you’re looking for.

If you have a collection you’re proud of, why not let it become part of the design? Glass-front wardrobes or open display shelving can transform favorite pairs into a feature, while everyday shoes remain tucked neatly behind closed doors.

Lighting matters more than you think.

One of our favorite details is also one of the most practical.

Instead of placing lighting where it shines into your eyes every time you open the wardrobe, we angle the lighting toward the shelves themselves. The result is beautifully illuminated footwear with less glare, making it easier to appreciate every detail while creating the feeling of walking into a luxury boutique.

Now… what about the boots?

Boot storage deserves just as much attention as shoes.

Depending on where you live, boots may take up a small corner of the wardrobe or an entire section. In Texas, for example, many homeowners have extensive cowboy boot collections that deserve storage designed specifically for them.

Some clients prefer pull-out boot trees that help preserve the shape of the leather while keeping every pair easy to access. Others like dedicated shelving paired with boot trees or boot shapers. Like everything else in a custom wardrobe, there isn’t one solution. There are countless possibilities designed around the collection itself.

Every detail is customized.

The shelves themselves can be crafted from virtually any material in our collection, including warm natural veneers, architectural laminates, elegant glass, and more. Every finish is selected to complement the overall wardrobe while reflecting the style of the homeowner.

And no two wardrobes are ever alike.

Our partnership with Schmalenbach Design combines generations of German craftsmanship with truly personalized wardrobe design. Because a custom wardrobe shouldn’t adapt to your collection.

Your collection should inspire the wardrobe.
